We all know about frequent vomiting in early months of pregnancy and there are no exceptions to this phenomenon! Yes, it will be frequent, annoying and weakening, for her. You will get a lot of advice on how to curb this (especially in India!) and even books written on it. We want to focus on some key aspects i.e. Encourage her to NOT stress the gut i.e. eat healthy; space apart the meals; refrain from over-eating or under-eating; stay hydrated and get good rest. In our view, these are the most practical and logical ways to minimize morning sickness. First, discourage her to be on empty stomach. Help her to eat little and frequently – for e.g. by having lot of snacks! And equally important is to eat high-protein food (especially pulses and nuts) and AVOID fried, fatty, spicy and acidic stuff. Help her to avoid tea as the starting meal and rather have a quick snack ‘while in bed’ before getting up; such as bread/toast. Indeed she would love, if she’s given breakfast in bed! Lemon may also help! Lemon slices can be added to iced tea or water, to reduce chances of vomiting. Ginger in limited amounts, can also reduce nausea (e.g. ginger tea). Second, if she is anxious of drinking too much water, due to fear of vomiting – suggest her to keep having fluids in-between meals. Staying hydrated is extremely important for her and baby’s health. Third, getting rest is critical, as stress and tiredness worsens vomiting. Remember, morning sickness can be reduced but not eliminated. And, if vomiting is unbearable – please consult your obstetrician for safe medication.
