Imagine the list of lifestyle changes advised to the mother during the critical nine months! Don’t you think it will be more practical if you ‘partner’ with her, to adopt these changes? The first thing is eating healthy i.e. more green vegetables, fruits, starch (e.g. bread, potatoes, pasta, rice, cereal), protein (e.g. fish, lean meat, eggs, pulses) and milk products. Plus, it’s critical to eat iodized salt. Remind her to take iron-folic acid tablets on time. If there are unbearable side-effects, please report to the doctor and discuss the possibility of changing the type of tablet, or opting for liquid iron/injections. Both of you must avoid under cooked food and junk food; and not have more than 2 cups of tea/coffee a day! Stop smoking and never smoke in her presence – it reduces the baby’s growth in the womb. Reduce your alcohol consumption! Each time she has fever or illness, suspect a potential infection that must be immediately treated. However, prohibit her from taking any medication without the doctor’s prescription (remember the baby’s immune system is weak and sensitive). Provide her ample opportunities to rest (i.e. sitting or lying down) – not just during the last three months – but THROUGHOUT pregnancy. Keep in mind that rest allows the baby to gain more nutrition from the mother’s body. So, even if she’s working at home, tell her to take rest “in-between”. The key is to balance rest and house-work. Even continuous standing is counted as ‘work’!
